Random Thoughts

Award winning political cartoonist and artist Eric Lobbecke's upcoming exhibition, Random Thoughts, at NG Art Gallery is a visual unravelling of the artist's inner subconscious. Laid bare on his canvases in vermillion red and ultramarine blue, the dramatic images pose more questions than answers.

Consisting of a series of ten large works accompanied by ten smaller 50 x 50cm canvases, the exhibition is an attempt by Lobbecke to understand the root of the those random thoughts that drift in and out of everyone's mind. As he says, "I'm trying to find out what my thinking is [by watching] these thoughts come through my mind and then put down as a visual."

Some pieces let you follow a clear thought progression such as Music, depicting a red violinist clutching his brilliantly blue violin in which the musician's torso is mirrored by the head of a horse; Lobbecke's natural trail of musings to Vienna's Lipizzaner Horses, which his father used to tell him about as a boy. There are other tendrils of Lobbecke's mind weaving themselves through the brightly coloured canvas: the tree branches the violinist holds referencing Lobbecke's love of the natural world, a topic he explored previously in A Conversation with Nature.

Although a seemingly random exploration of process, Lobbecke has noticed motifs organically manifesting themselves throughout his compositions, in his words he has discovered his "own iconography." The incorporation of a fish symbolises fear, the repetition of hands denotes opportunity, the takeaway coffee cup a reference to contemporary culture, each motif acting as a visual clue for Lobbecke's own mind.

Random Thoughts is a step into the unknown, a Land of Oz or Alice's Wonderland, the visual formation of Descartes oft-quoted "I think therefore I am." The focus on Lobbecke's subconscious will make you reinterpret and analyse your own thoughts, in your attempt to find the meaning behind the secrets of each canvas.

A political cartoonist for The Australian for 23 years, Lobbecke takes more of an interest in what he is drawing rather than how when it comes to his fine art practise. "I already know how to draw... I'm trying to put more effort into the thought process," he comments. Based in Sydney, Lobbecke is highly admired for his contributions as a political commentator, receiving the News Limited Artist of the Year award as well as the Walkley Award for Best Artwork and Print Artwork three times. He has forged a successful career on the contemporary arts scene emerging as one of the most exciting artists in Australia.
