STUDIO ARTISTS IN COLOUR
Group Exhibition

See the work - scroll right >>

Studio ARTISTS In Colour is both an embrace and celebration of disabled adults who share a passion to pursue art professionally. The exhibition is a chance to see the magnificent talent of six artists exhibiting together for the first time, each applying colour through their own unique methodology, using it as the driving force in each of their works.

Adopting a fairly new philosophy, arts workers Gabrielle Mordy and Emma Johnston formed the Studio ARTIST collective in direct response to the needs of particular members working within the more recreationally focused core art program at Studio ARTES Northside.

Forging a new dialogue in the mainstream arena and extending his indispensible knowledge, respected art history professor at the University of Sydney and author of Influential Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives (2000), Colin Rhodes, has collaborated with the Studio ARTISTS duo since they won the 2011 Curator Mentorship Program offered by NAVA. Having established the Callan Park Gallery for Self Taught and ‘Outsider’ Art Research Collection (STOARC) at The University of Sydney, Rhodes is invited to open this extraordinary exhibition. His expertise in the field has tracked the movements of what has been termed ‘Outsider Art’, and in doing so helped to reframe a section that was once segregated and left on the fringes of the art world.

In March 2011 art critic Elizabeth Fortescue compared Studio ARTISTS work with that on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art's annual Primavera Show. Fortescue wrote "there was the same psychological energy and searching in the works…long may the (Studio ARTISTS) make their work".

This exhibition is a chance to see the magnificent talent of 6 artists Belinda Bennie, Micah Passfield, Meghan Pelham, Rachelle Rodriguez, Yvonne Stocker and James Taylor exhibit for the first time together.

In addition to the exhibition, NG Art Gallery will host an Art’s Club forum in which Owen Craven, Editor of Artists Profile Magazine will be in conversation with Colin Rhodes, Dean of Sydney College of the Arts; on the topic of Off The Fringe: Reframing Outsider Art in a Mainstream Context.

Studio ARTISTS In Colour will be opened on Tuesday 19 March at NG Art Gallery, Chippendale, from 6 - 8pm.
