Susan O’Doherty is one of Australia’s leading assemblage artists. Her practice, is not only entrancing, it is resoundingly conceptual.

Her last sell out show at NG Art Gallery was testament that art today can be playful, witty and a thoroughly subversive cultural attack on contemporary society.

In her latest body of work, ‘It’s a Man’s World’, O’Doherty explores the inequalities between the genders. Her work is not only an intriguing exploration of found objects – reassembled cleverly – but subject, ripe, for juicy discussion.

Her visually dapper assemblages see taps, vintage telephones, old car tyres, wheels, toy trains, dismembered doll limbs, chess pieces, antique clocks and cameras conspiring with other familiar household appliances to create unmistakably ‘male’ effigy’s.

O’Doherty’s practice relays her Mother’s fixation with collecting and restoring abandoned objects and her Father’s career in the army. The artist recalls that, for as long as she can remember, her mother had been ‘doing up’ junk and reusing it in practical ways.

Susan O’Doherty’s work has previously made comment on the controversial issues of distorted female beauty, the politics of war and the social phenomenon of technology.
