ANITA TESORIERO
Shadow & Reflection

Anita Tesoriero's solo exhibition Shadow and Reflection at NG Art Gallery gives prominence to the universally familiar snapshots of everyday life. Capturing the beauty of her home in Bondi and its surrounds, this collection of works explores contrasts in light from daytime to darkness and the shifts in presence.

Tesoriero’s Impressionistic canvases examine those “unheroic slices of ordinary life,” from a dip in the blue waves of Bondi Beach to the simple interplay of streetlights, darkness and a puddle on a residential street. After living next to the famous beach strip her entire life, Tesoriero knows the area intimately as a setting for contemplation and restoration in the day and of action and vitality in the evening.

Exploring a new range of skills in this series, Tesoriero, has chosen to include a series of nighttime pieces to complement her daytime beach scenes. The evocative nature of the dark “capture[s] the beautiful contrasts and dramatic qualities that images of the night can generate,” Tesoriero says. The noted shift in tone from the golden hues of sandy shores mixing with exposed flesh to the dark drizzle of night contrasting with stark headlights gives the series a sense of completion. The viewer is presented with a representation of place that is often overlooked.

Like the Impressionists before her, Tesoriero, is interested in capturing a moment of time through light. “The moods change according to the time of day, place and season,” Tesoriero believes. A noted shift is the people populating her canvases: in the daytime they are filled with friends and families frolicking in the waves, at night we only see drifting cars and cut-off headlights. Yet still with Tesoriero’s quick, blurred brushstrokes a fuzzy sense of memory and intimacy between the viewer and each snapshot captured is evoked. Although the mood has changed with the time of day, the drama of the night creates an aura of mystery and possibility that only darkness provides.

Drawing on inspiration from the Impressionist Masters Bonnard and Vuillard, Tesoriero also credits the simplicity or Edward Hopper and the sensuality of Lucien Freud as influences for her. And just like these giants of the art world, Tesoriero has mastered that sense of timelessness that goes hand in hand with representing the world before her as she sees it pass her by day after day.
