Parlour Games

Artist Ann Cape scratches the grimy surface of Chippendale's seedy underbelly for her up-coming exhibition at NG Art Gallery, Parlour Games.

Amongst a little-known Chippendale bondage house lies a subculture and it's many colourful characters. Within this sordid world Ann finds a vulnerability and beauty that is difficult, for the rest of us, to appreciate from the outside. Parlour Games focuses on the women; the women who service the sex hungry, fetish seekers and humiliation enthusiasts that linger unbeknownst to the rest of us.

For Parlour Games, Ann immersed herself in a place of unconventional wonder. Unpretentious and uninhibited, the dungeons, humiliation, whips, leather, cuffs, piss and mind games that make up this
underworld play a crucial role in creating a setting for her paintings.

It's not so much the risque debauchery or eccentric behavior that informs Ann Cape's work, she focuses her paintings on the human form, and by doing so discovers something genuinely human behind these mistresses, dominatrix and creatures of the night. In Parlous Games Ann combines her drawing finesse with her painterly ability, working with oils on linen and canvas. Her palette is alternately radiantly warm and ghostly. Her girls are either immersed in their surroundings or suspended in space, at ease in the confines of the composition and the confines of their bondage house environment.

"These images relate mostly to the girls themselves, without intentionally being too descriptive of their portraits." The artist says. "The girls arrive at the establishment as everyday individuals and with meticulous care they transform into something spectacular. Being all shapes and sizes, they create different and
alluring personas for themselves that fuel the land of fantasy they are offering to clients."

Ann has recently been a finalist in such prestigious prizes as the Archibald Portrait Prize, the Doug Moran, the Dobell Drawing Prize and the Portia Geach Portrait Prize and continues so gain momentum as one of Australia's strongest female figurative artists.

Parlous Games is a veritable feast of seductresses, sourcie mistresses, dominatrices, femme fatales and sex goddesses, Parlour Games, will be opened on Wednesday 27 November at NG Art Gallery, Chippendale, from 6 - 8pm by the infamous Madame Lash aka Gretel Pinnigal.
